Spring Showcase: Birding in Hamden
Per the New Haven Birding Club, late April and early May are a great time for birding in Hamden, with several locations in Hamden considered amongst the best in the region: East Rock Park, West Rock Ridge State Park, and Sleeping Giant State Park.
The Audubon Society designates East Rock Park as an Important Birding Area and states: “the park serves as an important stopover area for many species of migratory songbirds. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded in the park. On a good day in the spring, over 20 species of warblers are easily recorded within the park.” The trail area around the Mill River, behind the Eli Whitney Museum, is noted as a particularly popular area for birders in the spring. They also list Hamden’s Quinnipiac River Tidal Marsh as a Globally Important Birding Area.
The Sleeping Giant Park Association leads an “Early Bird Watchers Hike” on May 5th. Register here.
The Mother’s Day Bird Walk organized by the Eli Whitney Museum & Workshop includes two tour guides and free binoculars. Registration required.
Additionally, Hamdenites can participate in the NHBC scheduled bird walks, including 3 in Hamden in early May.
Finally, Hamden’s Fat Robin Wild Bird and Nature Shop is an excellent resource for information, equipment, and events - including weekly spring bird walks at Brooksvale Park. Checkout the Fox 61 video feature on the local shop:
