Winter Wonders: MLK Holiday
Multiple great opportunities to honor, educate, and celebrate during the MLK Holiday Weekend here in Hamden and New Haven. Events on Friday, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.
Hamden Public Library is partnering with Rise Up for Arts to create a new MLK mural at the Miller Library. A celebration of diversity, the mural will depict civil rights leaders, along with messages and symbols of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Hamdenites are encouraged to be a part of the design process here.
On Friday @ Miller Library’s Thornton Wilder Hall, the Town of Hamden’s MLK Day Celebration Committee will host an MLK birthday celebration event 12-1pm. This event offers attendees the opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s life, his mission, how he has affected our lives, and what we continue to learn from his service and wisdom. Members of the public are invited to attend and light refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, join the 53rd Annual MLK “Love March” organized by Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and 94.3 WYBC. 10:30am. Link for more details.
On Monday, Beinecke Library at Yale hosts its annual MLK event. Highlights of Beinecke Library collections related to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to the African American freedom movement will be on view. You will be able to see an array of materials, many drawn from the library’s James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of African American Arts and Letters, that highlight Dr. King’s life, legacy, and impact, and the long civil rights movement in the United States. On Sunday and Monday, Yale Peabody Museum’s 27th annual MLK Celebration. Events include: Family Storytelling and Dance; Z Experience Poetry Slam with a slate of renowned, featured poets competing. Link for more details and registration.
On Wednesday, Yale’s annual celebration includes keynote speaker Martin Luther King III, son of Dr. King. Link for more details and registration.
