Winter Wonders: “Irish Great Hunger” Collection @ QU
Explore an assortment of art, literature, and history related to Ireland’s Great Famine of the 19th century in the Lender Family Special Collection Room at the QU Library. Wander through the library a bit to see more original artworks related to The Great Hunger. (Also, although the museum is - sadly - closed, the online collection of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum is still available).
This year, a new exhibit has been installed, focused on Queen Victoria of Britain and her role in the Great Hunger. The exhibit and the artworks are free and open to the public, located in the QU Library.
Speaking of Ireland… perhaps pair that visit to QU with live Irish music and authentic Irish food and beverages at Hamden’s Playwright Pub. Live Irish music every Saturday (7pm) and Sunday (4pm). Named one of the Top 10 pubs in CT (link).

Hamden History:
2024 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Sleeping Giant Park Association. The SGPA website includes fascinating details on the history of the park and the organization’s role in saving it from commercial interests. An excerpt:
“They continued to remove rock from the Giant’s head, demanding $655,000 for the sale of their lease. Arnold Dana, who would eventually go on to become SGPA’s second President, took the company to court in 1930. Having survived a childhood fall from the Giant’s chin, Dana had a special affinity for the Giant and believed it had spared his life. The trial centered around the terms of the lease, as quarrying had become visible from Mt. Carmel Ave.”
