Summer Spotlight: Outdoor Summer Concerts
The Hamden Symphony Orchestra performed a fantastic live outdoor concert (“The American Community”) last week at Town Center Park before the fireworks display to celebrate American Independence Day. Next up, the Hamden community has two Hamden summer concert series beginning soon at two Hamden public parks. The annual Hamden Summer Concert Series every Friday night at Town Center Park, starts this week on July 7th at 7:30pm. Link for more details. Additionally, the annual Summer Family Concerts at Larry’s Playground in Bassett Park every Wednesday evening at 6pm, beginning in mid-July.
Friday July 7
Opening Night for the Hamden Summer Concert Series @ Town Center Park. Opening band at 7:30pm, Main band at 8pm. Nekita Waller brings her incredible voice and powerful stage presence to the park with a mix of pop, Motown, soul, Jazz, classic rock favorites and original music. Nekita is Connecticut’s first African American solo and non-folk artist to be appointed as State Troubadour. The opening act is contemporary Country Cover Southern Voice Band playing all the chart hits today, as well as pop, rock, southern rock, and dance genres. Link for more details.
French conversation group @ Miller Memorial Library & Cultural Center. This is the first in a series of meetings for the group. 4pm. All skill levels are encouraged from fluent to beginner. Link for more details.
Yale Carillon Summer Concert Series. Carillonneurs from all over the world are invited to come play the bells at Harkness Tower. Concerts are free and open to the public, and are held every Friday from 7-8pm. Link for more details.
The First Friday Documentary Series, presented by BVFCC & NHDocs, will screen “The Jewish Jail Lady and the Holy Thief”. 7pm @ BVFCC. Link for more details.
Saturday July 8
Yale Beinecke Introductory Tours. 1:30pm & 3pm. An introductory tour of the Beinecke Library, its mission, history, architecture, collections, and services. Tours last approximately 45 minutes. Link for more details.
Special Exhibition Tours, “In a New Light” @ 2:30pm. More than 50 major works of painting from the collection of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) are on view at the Yale University Art Gallery while the YCBA is closed for building conservation. Join YCBA docents to learn more about the exhibition, which spans four centuries of British landscape and portraiture traditions, as well as about the YCBA’s architecture, collection, and history. Sunday July 9
Walk-in STEM projects @ Hamden’s Eli Whitney Museum. Free. 10am-3pm. For children ages 5-12. A museum apprentice will work with your child as they build a project and begin to experiment. Sessions last from 20 minutes to an hour. Projects change from weekend to weekend. Link for more details.
Monday July 10
Free Hamden summer basketball camp for boys and girls 6th to 10th grade. 9am-12pm. Details below.
Dragon Academy @ HMS. A 4-day orientation program for incoming 7th graders. Link for more details and registration.
Tuesday July 11
Cupcake Wars @ Miller Memorial Library. 3-4pm. Calling all bakers! Put your skills to the test and compete in three themed rounds that pit cupcake v. cupcake. For teens in grades 7-12. Link to register.
Free girls lacrosse clinics every Tuesday at West Woods Elementary. 5:30-6:30pm. Details below.
Starting this July 11th, we will have a FREE Lacrosse Clinic on designated Tuesday nights down at Dunbar Hill. Open to boys K thru 8th grade, at any skill level. All you need is a stick, no other equipment necessary!
Wednesday July 12
Summer Daisy Program presented by Hamden Girl Scouts. All girls entering Kindergarten and 1st grade in the fall are invited. Link for more details.
Movies in the Plaza presents “Zootopia”. Grab your lawn chairs, picnic blankets and some takeout from a local spot, and spend an evening under the stars enjoying blockbusters, nostalgic blasts from the past, cult favorites, family films for all ages, and more. Link for more details.
Thursday July 13
“Sounds of Summer” event at Thornton Wilder Auditorium. 6-9pm. A great night of fun, music, food & fellowship, including performances from young, local artists. Link for more details.

Friday July 14
Hamden Summer Concert Series @ Town Center Park. Opening act at 7:30pm, Main act at 8pm. Enjoy the smooth sounds of The Timmy Maia Band, a native of Waterbury, CT bringing hits from today’s Top 40, jazz, classic rock and pop to Town Center Park with his extensive musical repertoire. He will take you on a soulful journey with his incredible sound and energy. The opening act is R&B, Funk, Soul & Eclectic dance and show band, The Bernadettes with an emphasis on classic "old school" R&B, representing beloved, timeless classics with a memorable performance.
