Summer Spotlight: Enrichment Programs @ HPL
“READy for the Grade” is an outstanding FREE summer enrichment opportunity for Hamden 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. The program begins June 26th, but registration is due by June 16th. Link for more details and for registration.
Beginning June 21, visit any Hamden Library location to sign up for the K-12 summer reading program — “Find Your Voice” is the theme this year — and get your summer reading swag bag. Link for more details.
FREE museum passes are available through the generosity of the Friends of the Hamden Library. One pass per family. Only two passes may be reserved per week. Options include: Beardsley Zoo, CT Science Center, Discovery Museum & Planetarium, Mystic Seaport, Wadsworth, Stepping Stones, and many many more. Link for more details.

MLK Mural Unveiling from 12-12:45PM outside Miller Memorial Library. Juneteenth Celebration from 1-4PM at Town Center Park will include remarks, musical performances, a “Black Girl Magic” segment, and a “Black Male Excellence” segment in addition to many vendors, crafters, exhibitors, food trucks, and several attractions. To celebrate the opening of the Beardsley Zoo’s new Andean bear habitat, the Zoo is teaming up with 25 area libraries to help put the “bear” in Bear-dsley Zoo while supporting literacy and reading. 500 prizes on peel off cards are hidden in books about bears. Children and their families are invited to search through books on bears at the Hamden Public Library, both fiction and non-fiction, in the children’s area. Link for more details.

Established in 1900 by the St. Andrew’s Society, this Wooster Square neighborhood’s annual event is among the oldest celebrations in New England. The open-air festa honors the neighborhood's Italian roots and celebrates cultural diversity. This time honored event has grown to attract thousands of people from around the region, and this year’s Italian Festa will feature live music, food, dance and more.

Open to Hamden high school juniors and seniors, “The View from Here” is a six-month photography program through the Yale Center for British Art. The program seeks to deepen young people’s engagement with visual art by exposing them to the history, materials, and practice of photography. Students learn the essential principles of taking and composing their own photographs using a smartphone or personal digital device. Working with curators, museum staff, Yale faculty, and photographers, students gain access to unique workshops, experiences, and mentorships. The program culminates in an exhibition of students’ work. Link for more details and to apply.
