Hamden History:
Two great opportunities to explore Hamden’s long and unique history this weekend, traveling back to the mid-1800s of the Farmington Canal waterway, or the early 1900s and the quarrying at Sleeping Giant and the efforts to protect and preserve the park:
Walk the Locks & Open House @ Lock 14
Annual Open House and “Walk the Locks” in celebration of National Trails Day. Begin at the restored Keeper’s House at Lock 14 in Hamden, where you can pick up a trail map, trail mix, and a drink and view an exhibit of the former canal and railroad. You can stay at the Lock Keeper’s house, or proceed up to Lock 12 in Cheshire, where there is an exhibit of the actual lock. 3 miles one way, or 6 round trip. Bike or walk or stroll as far as you want.
Explore the park's rich history. Join the Sleeping Giant Park Association for a guided hike exploring the history of Sleeping Giant State Park. This hike will be led by local historians/experts who have each done extensive research into the history of the park and the Association. They will talk about the construction of the tower and the quarrying that gave rise to the movement to save the Giant a century ago.
